At Fable England, Random Acts of Kindness Day holds a special place in our hearts, not only as a chance to spread kindness to each other but also to show love to nature. Over the years, we’ve embraced this day with thoughtful activities like feeding the ducks, litter picking, sowing wildflower seeds, and even crafting bird feeder wreaths. This year, we continue our tradition with a delightful DIY project: a Mason Jar Butterfly Feeder. It's a beautiful way to give back to nature, inviting delicate butterflies to flutter into your garden while adding a touch of charm to your outdoor space.

How to Make Your Own DIY Mason Jar Butterfly Feeder
Materials Needed:
- An empty mason jar with a lid
- Natural sea sponge
- Scissors or hammer and nail
- String or twine
- Sugar and water for butterfly food
- Dried pressed flowers and Mod Podge for decoration (optional)
- Paints or fresh flowers for alternative decoration ideas (optional)
1. Prepare the Lid: Using a hammer and nail or sharp pair of scissors, puncture a hole in the centre of the lid.
2. Insert the Sponge: Place a piece of natural sea sponge snugly into the hole. This will act as the feeder wick.
3. Decorate Your Feeder: Use Mod Podge to adhere dried pressed flowers to the jar for a whimsical touch. Alternatively, paint the jar in vibrant colours or wrap it with fresh blooms – remember, butterflies are attracted to bright colours as they mimic real flowers!
4. Create the Hanger: Turn the jar upside down. Cut two pieces of string and wrap each around the base of the jar, securing with double knots opposite each other. You’ll have four strings extending from the jar. Tie them in pairs halfway up, then again at the top, forming a macramé-style hanger.
5. Add Butterfly Food: Mix ten parts water to one part sugar and fill the jar with this mixture. Seal the lid tightly.
6. Hang Your Feeder: Invert the jar so the sponge is saturated with sugar water and hang it in your garden.
This DIY butterfly feeder is more than just a craft; it’s a heartwarming way to connect with nature. It's a perfect half-term activity to enjoy with kids, teaching them about wildlife while engaging their creativity. Alternatively, gather your friends for a fun crafting afternoon complete with sweet treats and cosy chats. Whatever the occasion, this project is a lovely reminder that small acts of kindness can have a big impact, especially when shared with nature.
